How much cash can you take to Kazakhstan?

Kazakhstan is one of the few countries where this is not simply a declaration. Up to USD 10,000 you carry cash freely; above it, taking foreign currency out is prohibited rather than declarable.

Above this figure, taking foreign cash out is prohibited outright — it has to move through a bank.

Entering Kazakhstan

USD 10,000

or more — declare it

Leaving Kazakhstan

USD 10,000

above this it may not be carried

Applies per person. Each traveller has their own figure. That does not make splitting a large sum across a group to avoid the threshold lawful — several countries treat that as an offence in its own right.

The rule in Kazakhstan, in full

Threshold is legally defined in USD-equivalent. Cash/traveller's cheques exceeding USD 10,000 equivalent must be declared in writing on entry and exit. IMPORTANT nuance: under a Presidential Decree (14 Mar 2022, still in force as of check) EXPORT of foreign cash exceeding USD 10,000 equivalent is PROHIBITED (not merely declarable) — amounts above must move via banking channels. Applied per person/per family member (each member may carry up to USD 10,000); minors under 16 are combined onto the accompanying adult's form, so perGroup=false. If total exceeds ~USD 100,000 equivalent, proof of origin required.

Form: Passenger customs declaration with 'Declaration of cash and (or) monetary instruments' supplement. Get it from the authority at the border or their site — we don't mirror it here, because forms are revised without notice and a stale copy is worse than none.
