How much cash can you take to Japan?
There is no cap on what you may carry into Japan. At JPY 1,000,000 or more you must tell customs, which is free and takes a few minutes. The same figure applies leaving.

Applies per person. Each traveller has their own figure. That does not make splitting a large sum across a group to avoid the threshold lawful — several countries treat that as an offence in its own right.

The rule in Japan, in full
Cash or equivalent means of payment (foreign/Japanese notes & coins, cheques, promissory notes, securities) totalling JPY 1,000,000 or more (or equivalent in foreign currency) must be declared when entering or leaving Japan. Same threshold both directions, per traveller. Declaration at the red channel. Non-declaration or false declaration results in a fine of up to JPY 500,000.
