How much cash can you take to Indonesia?

There is no cap on what you may carry into Indonesia. At IDR 100,000,000 or more you must tell customs, which is free and takes a few minutes. The same figure applies leaving.

Entering Indonesia

IDR 100,000,000

or more — declare it

Leaving Indonesia

IDR 100,000,000

or more — declare it

Applies per person. Each traveller has their own figure. That does not make splitting a large sum across a group to avoid the threshold lawful — several countries treat that as an offence in its own right.

Carrying foreign banknotes worth IDR 1,000,000,000 or more also needs prior permission from Bank Indonesia — a licence, not just a declaration.

The rule in Indonesia, in full

Cash or bearer negotiable instruments (banknotes, cheques, traveller's cheques, promissory notes, certificates of deposit) in rupiah or foreign currency valued at IDR 100,000,000 (100 million) or more must be declared to Customs when entering or leaving Indonesia. Same threshold both directions, per person. ADDITIONAL RESTRICTION: physically carrying foreign banknotes worth IDR 1,000,000,000 (1 billion) or more across the border requires prior permission/licence from Bank Indonesia (a restriction beyond simple declaration). Enforced by Bea Cukai (Directorate General of Customs and Excise) under Law No. 8/2010 and related Bank Indonesia regulations. Non-declaration penalty is a fine of 10% of the undeclared amount. Note: primary source is beacukai.go.id; the cited page summarizes the Bea Cukai rule.

Form: Customs Declaration (BC 2.2) / e-CD. Get it from the authority at the border or their site — we don't mirror it here, because forms are revised without notice and a stale copy is worse than none.
