How Cathay Pacific's baggage charges work

Two separate charges can apply. An overweight fee is charged per bag when that bag is heavier than the standard limit, and the amount depends on which weight bracket it lands in. An extra-piece fee is charged for each bag beyond the number your fare includes. They stack: a third bag that is also overweight pays both.

Oversize is a third charge. It is about dimensions rather than weight, usually the total of length, width and height, and the table above does not cover it. Some airlines charge once for a bag that is both overweight and oversize; others charge twice.

Pay before you fly. Extra weight or pieces bought at booking or in manage-my-booking cost less than the same allowance bought at the airport desk, often by a wide margin. It is usually non-refundable, so buy it once you know your final weight.

At the desk with a heavy bag, your options are to move weight into carry-on, spread it across your party's bags, wear the heaviest items, pay, or send the weight separately. For anything beyond a few kilograms the last of those is frequently the cheapest, which is what the calculator above compares.

Cathay Pacific excess baggage: common questions

Does Cathay Pacific charge excess baggage per kilogram or per bag?

Per bag. Cathay Pacific uses the piece system: each bag over the standard weight limit pays a flat overweight fee for its weight bracket, and each bag beyond the number your fare includes pays a separate extra-piece fee. A third bag that is also overweight pays both.

How much does Cathay Pacific charge for overweight baggage?

Hong Kong to/from Zone 1 (regional Asia): 23–32 kg: $60 · extra bag $100; Hong Kong to/from Zone 4: 23–32 kg: $130 · extra bag $150; Hong Kong to/from Zone 5/6 (long haul incl Americas): 23–32 kg: $150 · extra bag $200. From Cathay Pacific's published rates, checked 2026-07-24.

What is the heaviest checked bag Cathay Pacific accepts?

32 kg per bag on the routes listed above. Anything heavier is refused at check-in regardless of fee, so split it across two bags.

Is it cheaper to pay Cathay Pacific for extra baggage online before the flight?

Almost always. Airlines sell additional weight or pieces at booking and through manage-my-booking for less than the desk price at the airport, and the gap can be large. The exact saving varies by route and fare, so check Cathay Pacific's baggage page before you travel. Prepaid allowance is usually non-refundable, so buy it once you know your final weight.

Is an overweight bag the same as an oversize bag?

No. Overweight is about kilograms and is what the table above covers. Oversize is about dimensions, usually the total of length, width and height, and airlines price it as a separate charge. A bag can be both, and some airlines charge once for either while others charge twice. Check the source page for how this airline handles a bag that is both.

What can I do if my bag is over the limit at check-in?

Move weight into your carry-on up to its own limit. If you are travelling with someone, even the weight out across bags, since piece-system airlines charge per bag and one 26 kg bag plus one 18 kg bag can cost more than two 22 kg bags. Wear the heaviest items. Pay the fee if the excess is small. For a lot of weight, sending it separately is often cheaper than the excess charge.
